PREVALENCE OF KIDNEY STONE AND KIDNEY STONE RECURRENCE ALONG WITH PERCEPTION OF DIETARY INFLUENCE ON RENAL STONE

Abstract

 Introduction: Kidney stone incidence and prevalence are increasing globally, People between the ages of 30 and 60 are typically affected by kidney stones, which are rather prevalent. Men are more impacted than women. Urinary stone patients typically present with the classic reno-ureteral colic and less frequently with loin pain.

Materials and methods: This was an observational cross sectional study conducted among patients at multi-speciality hospital at Erode for 9 months. The self structured questionnaire were prepared and patient demographic data was collected and their perception towards dietary influence was taken. The data collected were tabulated, analysed, and interpretated using standard statistical tools. Pamphlets were given to educate patients on diet and kidney stone prevention.

Result and Discussion:  The study was conducted among 109 patients. Out of them 65 were males and 44 were females. In our study 34.86% from 46-55 years category were more prevalent to kidney stone formation. Around 44% of patients reported had previously experienced kidney stones, with most incidents occurring between 5 to 8 years prior to the study. Majority of patients believe dietary intake have influence towards kidney stone and that the frequencies for each food type shows a considerable percentage of respondents(18.34%) were unaware about the specific dietary foods contributing to kidney stone formation.

Conclusion: The study found higher kidney stone prevalence in males and ages 45–55, with hypertension linked to recurrence. Negative perceptions increased in recurrence patients and Pamphlet were provided to patients to prevent the recurrence of kidney stones.
