Abstract

This paper presents a novel approach to the drawing and utilization of patent portfolios, leveraging multidimensional scaling (MDS) techniques for enhanced analysis and strategic decision-making. Patent portfolios play a crucial role in protecting intellectual property and fostering innovation within organizations. However, the complexity and sheer volume of patents often pose challenges for effective portfolio management and utilization. Drawing upon principles of MDS, this study proposes a methodological framework that enables the visualization and analysis of patent portfolios along multiple dimensions, including technological relevance, market potential, and competitive landscape. Through a combination of data mining, natural language processing, and statistical modeling, we demonstrate how MDS can be applied to identify patent clusters, detect emerging trends, and assess the strategic positioning of patents within a portfolio. Moreover, we explore how MDS-derived insights can inform various strategic decisions, such as portfolio optimization, technology licensing, and R&D prioritization. Case studies and empirical examples are utilized to illustrate the practical implications of employing MDS in patent portfolio management across different industries and organizational contexts. Furthermore, we discuss the potential synergies between MDS and other analytical techniques, such as network analysis and machine learning, for more comprehensive portfolio assessment and strategy formulation. By integrating MDS into the patent portfolio lifecycle, this research aims to empower organizations with a more nuanced understanding of their intellectual assets and facilitate informed decision-making in the pursuit of competitive advantage and sustainable innovation.
