This study examines the independent innovation capability of the Wenzhou shoe industry through the lens of global value chain theory. The Wenzhou shoe industry has emerged as a prominent player in the global footwear market, renowned for its flexibility, agility, and entrepreneurial spirit. However, to sustain its competitive edge in an increasingly dynamic and competitive landscape, the industry must continuously enhance its innovation capabilities. Drawing on the global value chain framework, this research investigates how the Wenzhou shoe industry integrates into global value chains and identifies opportunities for enhancing its independent innovation capability. Through case studies, interviews, and quantitative analysis, the study examines the industry's position within global footwear value chains, its relationships with lead firms and suppliers, and its efforts to upgrade product design, manufacturing processes, and branding strategies. By providing insights into the determinants of independent innovation within the Wenzhou shoe industry, this study aims to inform policymakers, industry stakeholders, and entrepreneurs on strategies for fostering innovation-driven growth and competitiveness in the global marketplace.
