Abstract

This research examines the dynamics of competition and coexistence within the patent system, focusing on a case study of four laser patents. Through a detailed analysis of the patents' specifications, claims, and citation networks, we explore the extent to which these patents compete or coexist with each other in the technological landscape. Drawing on theories of patent strategy, innovation diffusion, and technology evolution, we investigate factors such as patent scope, technological overlap, and strategic alliances that shape the interactions between the focal patents. Additionally, we assess the implications of competition and coexistence for innovation, market competition, and intellectual property management. The insights gained from this case study provide valuable lessons for patent practitioners, policymakers, and industry stakeholders navigating the complexities of the patent landscape and fostering innovation ecosystems.
