Abstract

This study explores the critical growth path of scientific elites in the realm of basic research, focusing on an analysis of chief scientists within the 973 Program. Leveraging empirical data and qualitative analysis techniques, this research investigates the career trajectories, academic backgrounds, collaboration networks, and key milestones of chief scientists involved in China's prestigious 973 Program, which supports high-impact, fundamental research projects. By tracing the professional journeys of these scientific elites, this study aims to uncover the factors and mechanisms that contribute to their emergence, development, and success in the basic research arena. Through the identification of critical growth paths, including educational experiences, research achievements, mentorship, and collaborative endeavors, this research sheds light on the pathways through which scientific elites ascend to prominence and exert influence within their respective fields. The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, funding agencies, and academic institutions seeking to nurture and support the next generation of scientific leaders and innovators in basic research domains.
