Abstract

This study investigates the complementarity between university-industry cooperation (UIC) and enterprise internal research and development (R&D) activities. Drawing upon theories of innovation, collaboration, and organizational economics, this research examines how UIC and internal R&D efforts interact to enhance innovation outcomes and firm performance. Through empirical analysis of firm-level data, including surveys and archival data, this study explores the mechanisms through which collaborative activities with universities complement internal R&D investments, leading to increased innovation capabilities, knowledge acquisition, and competitive advantage for firms. Moreover, this research investigates the moderating factors that influence the strength and direction of the relationship between UIC and internal R&D, such as firm size, industry characteristics, and institutional contexts. The findings offer insights into the strategic importance of fostering synergistic relationships between universities and industry partners, as well as internal R&D capabilities, to drive innovation and economic growth. This study contributes to the literature on innovation management and university-industry collaboration by providing empirical evidence and theoretical insights into the complementarity between different modes of innovation activity.
