Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive literature survey aimed at elucidating the intricate process through which radical technologies are developed. Radical technologies, characterized by their transformative impact on industries, societies, and human experiences, have garnered significant attention from scholars, policymakers, and practitioners alike. Drawing upon a wide range of interdisciplinary literature spanning fields such as innovation studies, technology management, engineering, and sociology of technology, this survey synthesizes existing knowledge and theoretical frameworks to provide insights into the multifaceted nature of radical technology development. We examine key concepts, theoretical perspectives, and empirical findings related to the genesis, evolution, and commercialization of radical technologies, including disruptive innovations, breakthrough inventions, and paradigm-shifting discoveries. Through a systematic analysis of seminal works and recent contributions in the field, we identify common patterns, drivers, and challenges associated with radical technology development processes. Additionally, we explore the roles of various stakeholders, such as entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, and policymakers, in fostering an enabling ecosystem for radical innovation. By synthesizing and critically evaluating the extant literature, this survey contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamics and determinants shaping the emergence and diffusion of radical technologies, thereby informing future research agendas and strategic decision-making in academia, industry, and public policy domains.
