Abstract

This paper proposes a novel model that integrates knowledge networks and social networks to elucidate the dynamics of organizational knowledge sharing networks. Recognizing the significance of both explicit and tacit knowledge in organizational contexts, as well as the social interactions that facilitate knowledge exchange, our model seeks to capture the complex interplay between these two dimensions. Drawing upon insights from social network analysis, knowledge management, and organizational behavior literature, we delineate the mechanisms through which knowledge flows and social connections intersect within organizational settings. Specifically, we conceptualize knowledge networks as repositories of explicit knowledge artifacts and expertise, while social networks encompass the informal relationships, communication channels, and trust-based ties among individuals within the organization. Through this integrated perspective, we examine how the structure, composition, and dynamics of knowledge and social networks influence the patterns and effectiveness of knowledge sharing processes. Moreover, we explore the role of key organizational factors, such as leadership, culture, and technology infrastructure, in shaping the alignment between knowledge and social networks and fostering a culture of collaborative learning and knowledge sharing. By offering a holistic framework that synthesizes insights from multiple disciplinary perspectives, this model contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms driving organizational knowledge sharing networks and provides valuable implications for practitioners seeking to enhance knowledge management strategies and foster a culture of innovation and knowledge creation within their organizations.
