Abstract

This paper attempts to make an analytical examination on the interplay between the moral and material forces with references with John Steinbeck’s Cup of Gold. The socioeconomic changes and total decline, in the application of ideologies brought in enormous changes. This change in socio-economic and political sphere has made the individual more responsible. The interplay of moral and material forces has not diminished. It is going on, in the work and the mind of every successful man. It is common knowledge that, the modern faces are the ultimate winners. The moral and material forces have the full force. It is between the gun and the will force. The characters are all rural folk, paisanos and burns. Steinbeck shows both in and out of their characters. He has not concealed the bad in them. He has also shown them that they are saints and angels, martyrs and holymen.
