Abstract

The present research paper is devoted to the portrayal of the image of subjugated and marginalized woman in Shobha De’s novel Socialite Evenings with an emphasis on men’s pride, incompatible marriages, conventional norms of behaviour and patriarchal social system as the existent forces of the subjugation and exploitation of woman. Shoba De in her first novel Socialite Evenings deals with feminist identity and independence. Karuna, the protagonist of the novel, a prominent Bombay (Mumbai) socialite, trying to escape the nightmare of a broken marriage, failed relationship and mentally disturbed sister. Karuna remains frustrated with all the three phases of her life “before marriage, married life, and life after separation from husband”. Karuna becomes firmer, fiercer in her aspiration and determination against patriarchy, to fend females and feminity, for equality.
