Abstract

This study investigates the protective effects of aqueous Ocimum sanctum (holy basil) extract against profenofos-induced reproductive toxicity in male rats. Profenofos, a widely used organophosphate pesticide, disrupts spermatogenesis, alters hormone levels, and reduces fertility. Male rats were divided into control, profenofos-exposed, and treatment groups receiving O. sanctum extract. Biochemical, hormonal, and histological analyses were conducted. Results showed that O. sanctum significantly improved sperm parameters; restored antioxidant enzyme levels, and mitigated oxidative stress-induced testicular damage. These findings suggest that O. sanctum extract has potential therapeutic effects in alleviating profenofos-induced reproductive toxicity, supporting its use as a natural remedy.
