Abstract

This paper explores the complex relationship between the ancient yogic chakra system and contemporary scientific understanding of the mind-body connection, with a targeted focus on the role of color. The chakra system, rooted in ancient Indian traditions, posits seven energetic centers ("chakras") within the human "subtle body." Each chakra is associated with a specific color, anatomical location, and a spectrum of psychological and physiological functions. This paper critically examines these traditional chakra-color associations, bridging them with insights from neuroscience, psychology, and physics. It investigates the biophysical mechanisms underlying color perception (light wavelengths, retinal stimulation, and neurological signaling), the impact of color on brainwave activity (assessed by EEG), the relationship between chakra location and associated organ function, potential hormonal influences, and speculative connections with astrological influences (Navagrahas). The paper evaluates the available empirical evidence for chakra-based therapies, acknowledging the historical lack of direct scientific validation of the chakra system as an energetic construct. The discussion explores potential metaphorical and psychological frameworks to translate the tenets of the chakra system to modern integrative wellness. It highlights the continued need for methodologically rigorous research into the color-mind-body connection to inform holistic approaches to healing.
