Abstract

This research delves into the intricate dynamics of stakeholder involvement in the innovation process of complex products and systems, using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) projects as a case study. Complex products and systems, such as ERP solutions, involve multiple stakeholders with diverse interests, knowledge, and roles, making the innovation process inherently complex and challenging. Drawing upon stakeholder theory, systems theory, and innovation management literature, this study investigates the function mechanism of stakeholders in driving innovation within ERP projects. Through a comprehensive case study approach, involving interviews, document analysis, and observations, we analyze the roles, interactions, and contributions of various stakeholders, including users, developers, managers, vendors, and external consultants, throughout different stages of the ERP project lifecycle. The research aims to uncover the mechanisms through which stakeholders influence the identification of needs, requirements specification, solution design, implementation, and post-implementation evaluation in ERP projects. Furthermore, we explore the factors that shape stakeholder engagement and collaboration, such as power dynamics, communication channels, organizational culture, and project governance structures. The findings of this research contribute to a deeper understanding of the complexities of stakeholder involvement in innovation projects and provide practical insights for project managers, practitioners, and policymakers seeking to effectively manage stakeholder relationships and maximize innovation outcomes in the context of complex product and system development.
