This paper aims to conceptualize and propose a method for measuring the notion of "technology span." Technology span refers to the breadth of technologies encompassed within a particular domain, industry, or organization. We develop a theoretical framework to define technology span and delineate its key dimensions, including technological diversity, complexity, and breadth. Building on insights from innovation studies, technology management, and organizational theory, we propose a set of indicators and metrics to quantify technology span at various levels of analysis. These metrics encompass measures of technological variety, novelty, interconnectedness, and dynamism within a given technological domain or portfolio. Moreover, we discuss the practical implications of assessing technology span for firms, policymakers, and researchers in terms of innovation strategy, technology portfolio management, and capability development. By advancing the conceptualization and measurement of technology span, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of technological landscapes and their implications for innovation and competitiveness.
