Abstract

Apoptosis is an essential biological mechanism characterized by the programmed death of cells, which has a fundamental role in restraining the propagation of damaged cells. Dysregulation of apoptosis promotes tumour formation and the development of abnormal cells. Consequently, the involvement of apoptosis as a mechanism for drug resistance has been considered to be a valid method to stop the proliferation of cancerous cells.

This review paper discusses the intricate connection between cancer and apoptosis, focusing on the use of biological agents to modulate apoptotic pathways that helps to inhibit the growth of cancer. This review is focussed on natural compounds known as dietary factors, which include Curcumin, Resveratrol, Genistein, Eugenol, Gingerol, Berberine, etc.

The review primarily focuses on the importance of apoptosis and its pathways. The natural compounds reviewed in this study induce apoptosis by different methods, including disruption of signalling pathways, activation of death receptors, and regulation of critical apoptotic regulators. Furthermore, this review emphasizes the potential for positive outcomes from the combination of all these natural compounds, hence increasing the chemo-preventive potential even further.
